Tête-à-Terra at DDW 2023
01.11.2023Tête-à-Terra is a collaborative, community-powered effort that originated from shared ambitions and a series of conversations amongst three partners, ATÖLYE Architecture, Mono Earth, an earth architecture studio in Cappadocia, and Kalebodur, Turkey’s leader in the ceramic industry.
The project explores how the existing connection between architecture and natural surroundings reflects our shared past, and conveys the urgent need to reevaluate priorities around sustainability and fairness from a global and local lens.
The pavilion, made of two walls, utilizes handcrafted, environment-friendly earth bricks made from a mix of various soils and ceramic waste fragments from industrial production to create a transit point, inviting individuals to pause and reflect, and to engage with the space and others within it in conversation and ideation. Tête-à-Terra is an exploration of themes of collective memory, celebrating diversity and abundance, and emphasizes the concept of creation from soil, symbolizing human and earth’s potential and the importance of sustainability.
This year, it was featured in Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, amidst several projects highlighting the importance and relevance of sustainability practices and the power and potential of regenerative design.
