February UNFOLD: How Can Participatory Urban Strategies Benefit Citizens and Promote a Culture of Safety?22.02.2023
We had a thought-provoking discussion with Tülin Hadi, the president of the Istanbul Citizens’ Assembly and the founding partner of TeCe Architecture, on participatory urban strategies and how they can benefit us all. From fostering a sense of community to promoting safety culture, we explored the many ways that involving citizens in decision-making can make our cities better places to live during the discussion moderated by Güray Oskay, Director of ATÖLYE Architecture.
With the recent earthquakes in the Maraş region and the potential one in İstanbul, we discussed the importance of having a tightly-knit community and involving citizens in urban planning and decision-making processes to create safer cities during emergencies.

Tête-à-Terra at DDW 202301.11.2023
Tête-à-Terra is a collaborative, community-powered effort that originated from shared ambitions and a series of conversations amongst three partners, ATÖLYE Architecture, Mono Earth, an earth architecture studio in Cappadocia, and Kalebodur, Turkey’s leader in the ceramic industry.
The project explores how the existing connection between architecture and natural surroundings reflects our shared past, and conveys the urgent need to reevaluate priorities around sustainability and fairness from a global and local lens.
The pavilion, made of two walls, utilizes handcrafted, environment-friendly earth bricks made from a mix of various soils and ceramic waste fragments from industrial production to create a transit point, inviting individuals to pause and reflect, and to engage with the space and others within it in conversation and ideation. Tête-à-Terra is an exploration of themes of collective memory, celebrating diversity and abundance, and emphasizes the concept of creation from soil, symbolizing human and earth’s potential and the importance of sustainability.
This year, it was featured in Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, amidst several projects highlighting the importance and relevance of sustainability practices and the power and potential of regenerative design.
