Izmir City Hall
How might we vertically re-organize spaces of democracy from ancient cities, in a small plot in contemporary urban context?
The building has a fragmented mass organization that was created considering its functions. Semi-open spaces start from the square, and public spaces reach up to the upper terraces. Thanks to the size of the masses and the way they are brought together, the building has a low facade and gradually rises towards its multi-story neighbor. This effect allows the building to offer a balanced silhouette facing the sea. The square in Izmir preserves its beloved organization while incorporating new focal points and elements.
The clock tower remains the main attraction, and the nearby landscape is kept intact. The square has been extended to include the governorate facade and mosque, seamlessly integrating them into the overall design. A lush green band along the coastal road is enhanced and safeguarded, with water elements expanding and encircling the parliament hall, paying homage to the building's historical connection to the sea. This intervention serves as a reminder of the old coastal line and the building's past relationship with the sea, predating the construction of the coastal road.
