Play Tower
How might we repurpose a historical landmark that is not in use to regenerate its context and revive its essence?
For decades this architectural gem had the daunting task of defending the city and its people. Its limestone walls carried a heavy burden and now the duty it was built to fulfill is obsolete. A joyful transformation of Torre Rinalda is the conceptual idea competition entry proposal for the Reuse Italy competition. In reimagining the destiny of Torre Rinalda, our design seeks to celebrate the historical significance of this architectural gem while ushering it into a new era of leisure and joy on the Italian beachfront.Torre Rinalda is now a tower on a beach. Our proposal can be considered a retirement -or even better- a thank you gift to the tower. We invite Torre Rinalda to be part of the Italian beach fun. The existing structure is completed into full form using a lightweight and see-through metal mesh, reminiscent of fishing nets. This playful pink addition almost turns the tower into a sand castle on the beach. Inside, a staircase leads to the existing terrace. The room is filled with a thousand pink plastic balls for kids to enjoy. Halfway up the stairs is a knitted hammock where on could lay down underneath the skylight and just watch the clouds or stars.
